MTNL Launches India's First 3G Services in Delhi

In continuation of India's DoT (Department of Telecommunications) recent allocation of 3G spectrum to two state-owned telecom operators BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.) and MTNL (Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd.) without auctioning, MTNL launched India's first 3G services, initially in Delhi, the Hindu reported on December 12. Additionally, MTNL's 3G services is expected to begin commercialization by the end of January, 2009, covering both Delhi and Mumbai, according to the same source. As a special offer, the first month of the company's 3G services will be available free of charge.

Meanwhile, another state-owned telecom operator BSNL expects to launch 3G services in Chennai in January 2009 as well, the India Times reported on December 11.
